🚘 Guide, Don't Give

Every GPS works the same way: you tell it where you want to go, it gives you turn by turn directions, but you're still the one behind the wheel making the decision to not turn onto that steep dirt road (that's a true Montana story 😁).

That's basically my whole philosophy on AI in the classroom too, which is exactly why this month's big release is called Guide, Don't Give.

This issue is your full route for the next few weeks:

  • 🚘 Stop 1: A framework for using AI as a real learning tool
  • ✈️ Stop 2: ISTELive 26, where to find me in Orlando next week
  • 🚦 Stop 3: 4 new podcast episodes in the screen time series
  • β›½ Stop 4: A full lineup of free webinars, summer sessions, and a free July summit

🚘 Stop 1: Guide, Don't Give

I mentioned last month that I was mapping out a framework to help you figure out if and when AI deserves a seat in your lesson. The route is finished: a full blog post and a two-page visual infographic, ready whenever you want to put it in drive.

✈️ Stop 2: ISTELive 26, Destination Orlando

This weekend I've got my GPS set to Orlando for ISTELive 26. I have four sessions on my itinerary:

  • Monday, 12:30-1:00pm, Brisk Booth 2306: Guide, Don't Give: A Framework for Using AI as a Learning Tool
  • Wednesday, 8:30-9:20am, Playground B: Good Vibes Only: AI-Powered Game Building for Non-Coders
  • Wednesday, 9:25-10:15am, Playground B: Friendship Bracelets for Your EdTech Era
  • Wednesday, 11:00am-12:45pm, Playground A: Sew Circuit, Sew Creative: Real Wearable Technology for All

If our routes are crossing in Orlando, let's connect. Send me an email or grab a slot on my ISTE calendar.

🚦 Stop 3: Recalculating the Screen Time Conversation

The conversation around screen time in schools keeps taking a one-size-fits-all detour on a topic that needs a much more nuanced approach. I'm doing the only rerouting I know how: teaching!

My podcast series keeps going, and the last four episodes have all been interviews with educators opening the windows into their classrooms and schools to share what's actually happening, where technology helps and where it doesn't.

More stops on this route coming soon!

β›½ Stop 4: Refuel Along the Way

Need to top off the tank before returning to school this fall? Here's where to do it this summer:

Webinars:
  • BINGO Your Way to Better Videos: 12 Techniques That Actually Keep Students Watching: July 30th at 3:00 Eastern time. Free to all! Register
  • Shake Up Learning's virtual Summer Learning Series: My first session Video Is Not Optional for Educators…And You’re More Ready Than You Think is live! My second session Tired of Student AI Slop? Solve It with the Assessment Puzzle Toolkit will be live July 9.
Events:
  • Gateway AI in EDU Summit: I am a featured speaker at this FREE event on July 23 in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey. NJ and Philly educators: I hope to see you there!

That's the route for this month. Borrow what's useful, skip what's not, and remember the destination is always the kids in front of you, not the tool doing the driving. No wrong turns this summer, just a few extra stops along the way.

See you next month!

Bingo Your Way to Better Videos

Happy back-to-school season! 🍎 If your to-do list currently scrolls longer than a TikTok feed, you are in good company. Mine does too. So this month's newsletter is intentionally short and sweet: a quick scroll's worth of ideas you can actually use during the busiest season of the year. And speaking of the scroll... that's exactly our theme for this month's newsletter. This edition is all about short-form video: how to think about it, how to model healthy habits around it, and how to steal...

The screen time debate needs a channel change

Everyone has an opinion about "screen time" right now. Politicians. Pediatricians. Parents. Your neighbor. The internet. ALL of them. And honestly? Some of these opinions are worth listening to. Some of them... need to be changed to a different channel. Think about it this way: a TV is just a TV. You can watch a David Attenborough documentary or a reality show where people eat bugs for money. Same screen. Completely different experience. One has learning potential. The other... well, I'll let...

Happy AI literacy day!

πŸ₯³ Happy AI Literacy Day! March 27th is National AI Literacy Day in the US, and there's no better way to celebrate than with a special edition newsletter, podcast episode, and blog.
